The shelter’s holiday event, Santa Paws Sleepover, offered pet lovers the chance to foster a dog temporarily from December 21st 2024 to January 4th 2025.
The program provided everything, food, bedding, you name it so the dogs could experience the warmth of a loving home for the holidays.
When I arrived at the shelter that week, I was amazed at how quiet it was.
The normally bustling kennel halls were nearly empty, with just a few stalls occupied.
Seeing so many dogs out enjoying a holiday with families was heartwarming.
Of course, it was no surprise that Koko, my #1 pup in the shelter, was away enjoying her sleepover with a family for the holidays.
I was thrilled for her but left wondering who I would walk since my usual favorites were away.
Recently, the shelter implemented a system to help volunteers identify which dogs were safe to walk and which required extra caution.
Dogs with names written in red font indicated those who might be more challenging.
Unfortunately, with the limited number of dogs in the kennel that day, most of the remaining pups had their names in red.
After pacing the halls, unsure of who to choose, my indecision cleared when I reached the end of the kennel and locked eyes with Smoke.
Yes, my hesitation on who to walk was replaced by a “cloud of Smoke.”
(You see I tried to be clever and work in the name of the dog I walked but It turned out pretty lame. Sorry, I couldn’t resist! Lol)
Smoke is a 1 year and 7 month old American Staffordshire Terrier mix with striking features.
His coat is a stunning ashy brown, with a unique wave along the middle of his back.
I couldn’t tell if it was a natural quirk or the result of a recent haircut growing in.

And his hazel eyes, wow.
They seemed to hold a hypnotic power, drawing me in and making it impossible to resist taking him out for a stroll.

Once outside, Smoke proved to be an amazing walking buddy.
He walked well on the leash with minimal pulling, remained calm around other dogs, and didn’t bark or seem threatened.
He’s one smart cookie, too!
Smoke already knows the “sit” command and was eager to earn his treats, even vocalizing his excitement when he wanted more.

Spending time with Smoke was a joy.
He’s a handsome, intelligent pup with a sweet personality.
I’m so glad I chose to walk him, and I hope to take him out again soon.
