Hi, I’m Kat!
I’ve been volunteering at my local animal shelter since July 2024.
When I first signed up, I just wanted to get out of my head and do something good, something that would help others (or in this case, dogs).
What I didn’t expect was how rewarding it would be to care for these pups.
They get to step outside the shelter walls, explore new surroundings, and release all that pent-up energy.
Meanwhile, I get to soak up nature’s calm and spend time with some truly amazing dogs in need of a little love and adventure.
The aim of this blog is to shine a positive light on shelter dogs.
I know that sometimes shelter dogs get a bad reputation.
I used to believe the same misconceptions, that dogs in shelters were “bad” or “troubled.”
But I quickly learned that isn’t true at all.
Many of them are here through no fault of their own, sometimes because their owners passed away, faced financial hardship, or simply couldn’t care for them anymore.
Through Walking with Strays, I hope to change those perceptions and show the heart and personality of these incredible dogs.
You’ll also find posts here for anyone interested in volunteering.
From what to bring on your first walk to tips for making the experience more enjoyable for both you and the dogs.
My hope is to encourage others to lend a helping hand (and heart) at their local shelters.
If you ever have questions or want to share your own volunteering stories, I’d love to hear from you!
Let’s make tails wag and hearts heal, one walk at a time.
