Meet Bojangles, a six-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix.
I didn’t get to walk this handsome guy myself, but I had the pleasure of tagging along while my walking buddy took him out for his stroll.

I arrived at the shelter later than usual that day and happened to catch them just as they were heading out so I decided to join in.
My walking buddy mentioned that Bojangles was extremely nervous when she first approached his kennel, hesitant, unsure, and not quite ready to trust.
When I walked up to him, I could feel that same wary energy.
So instead of crowding him, I quietly turned my attention to other things and gave him time to get used to me being there.
As we continued walking, I noticed a beautiful change.
Bojangles’ body began to relax.
His tail started wagging more, his movements softened, and before long, he seemed genuinely curious about the world around him.

It was such a sweet moment to witness, watching him soak in the sunshine, sniff the grass, and enjoy the freedom to explore.
He even stopped to check out a sculpture on display, though he seemed far more interested in the dirt it was sitting on!

When it was time to return to the shelter, we had to wait a few minutes outside while a staff member came to let us in.
We found a shady bench and took a seat and that’s when Bojangles’ personality truly shone through.

He leaned into us for constant tickles and back rubs, and even tried to sit in our laps like an oversized lapdog.

It was hard saying goodbye after that walk.
Bojangles left a mark on my heart, a gentle reminder that sometimes all a dog needs is patience, kindness, and a little fresh air to let their true spirit shine.
One walk, one tail wag, one small victory at a time, that’s what Walking with Strays is all about.
